Observable and yet-to-be-discovered lands in Life is Feudal can be transformed the way you like. Apart from that, the game has weather conditions that directly affect your playable character. All of these can get you well-deserved skill points and level-up your character (if you play solo) or the whole group (if you decided to take along a bunch of your friends). As for the learning, there is plenty of features to choose from: nice cooked meal, firmly established building, alchemy recipe. This is a true challenge on a battlefield when you are outnumbered by enemies. All combinations must be learned and performed by yourself. Maybe when the MMORPG launches things will be different, but in its infancy I can only suggest Life Is Feudal: Your Own to the most dedicated of gamers, with an equally dedicated and willing group to play with you. A game with potential, hounded by an increasingly hostile online community. While in combat, every mouse movement can be deadly to the opponent. But for me, it was another ‘walking simulator’. Updates are regular, with a patch on Friday fixing memory leak issues and assorted other bugs. The Steam page is informative, with big warnings that you're supporting development of something far from release.
It's certainly a well presented example, at least. I was interested in it as well, but the reviews on Steam seem to indicate the developer has either abandoned it or is about to. Even those who've not been warded off by bad experiences with The Stomping Land et al should have enough regular updates to games they do own to keep them going. I'll keep an eye on Life is Feudal Forest Village, see how it improves and if it keeps getting updates. Big budget blockbuster first-person shooters generally space themselves out a bit better than that, and they're actually finished upon release. Between Kickstarters and Early Access, this is the tenth or so massively ambitious game of its type this year. Not that I don't understand the appeal, I'm just surprised that after one, two or five experiences of big promises and long development times, people are still coming back. It's certainly a new wrapper for the formula, but the first time indie studio behind it freely admits it's as broken as the rest of them. It's been locked in the top five of Steam's best sellers list since release despite (perhaps because of?) the wealth of options within its steel-to-the-bollocks brutal genre. What's raising my chainmail eyebrow is its popularity. That's a fairly cool if definitely-still-alpha-looking medieval-ish hardcore multiplayer sandbox with severe death penalties and all the other survival systems you'd expect.
